Chasing Plaid

The ultimate rider's jersey.

What is Chasing Plaid?

Riding 1,200 miles around the entire perimeter of the UP is a heck of a bucket list accomplishment. That’s about the same distance as Detroit to Disney World—but way cooler!

Plaid is our nod to you! There are currently four plaid jerseys - Red, White, Purple, and Green.

During the annual group event, we pass out the Red Plaid jersey the night before a rider finishes the 10th day. Self supported riders let us know when you expect to finish and we’ll try to coordinate a jersey for you.

Red Plaid is for the bikers that ride the entire 1,200 miles throughout 10 sections (about 120 miles a day). You can do it in 10 consecutive days or over 10 years.

White Plaid is for bikers that already wear Red Plaid, and then ride all 1,200 miles in 10 consecutive days. They can do it in back to back years, or take years off between the challenges.

Copper Plaid is for bikers that already wear Red Plaid, and then ride all 1,200 mils NOT in 10 consecutive days. It’s to celebrate the riders accomplishment who keep coming back year after year and knocking off a few more stages.

Purple and Northern Lights Plaid is for bikers that ride around the U.P. a 3rd, and 4th time. This can be done in 10 consecutive days or over a period of years. Purple has special significance in that it represents the colors of Lions Club International and our cause of supporting Childhood Cancer in the U.P.

We checked. at 1,200 miles, TDY is the longest loop event route in the entire country. Maybe the continent. Maybe the world. Not sure about that. Maybe that intimidates you. Maybe it inspires you. Probably both. Whether all at once or spread over years, everyone on this page got it done! They are forever memorialized on the Hall of Plaid and can yell it out loud - “I just completed the longest loop bike event!” You can add “in the world” if you want. We wouldn’t doubt it. Put that on the wall. Nobody can take that away from you!
